BEAVERCREEK — Susan Randall has worn out a path on the Beavercreek bike trail. Now she owns a bronze medal from the Americas Race Walk Championships to show for it.
“It was a lot of fun to represent Team USA,” said the Beavercreek resident, part of a team that finished third in the Friday, May 1, 20K event in El Salvador at what once were called the Pan-American Games.
“The time is not that good, because the course was really hilly and hot. It was the toughest conditions I’ve ever raced in.”
Randall covered the 12.4-mile distance in one hour, 55 minutes and 58 seconds; approximately 9:20 per mile.
She teamed with Philadelphia’s Solomiya Logan (10th overall) and Maria Michta (13th) of Long Island, N.Y., to medal. They were 1-3 in last March’s Team USA qualifying event in Pharr, Texas.
Randall was 17th overall at the El Salvador race. Team placing was determined by combining a country’s three times.
Randall, 35, is from China and has been competing for only five years. She’s a regular on the bike trail, going 6-7 miles on easy training days and 15-18 miles on long Sunday walks.
Her next race will be the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 25-28. She also hopes to make the U.S. Olympic Team for the 2012 Games in London.
