COLUMBUS — Bellbrook’s Ann Alyanak ran away with the 32nd Nationwide Insurance Columbus Marathon on Saturday, winning the women’s race by more than three minutes with a time of 2 hours, 41 minutes, 53 seconds.
Alyanak wanted to reach the “A’’ standard for the women’s race in the Olympic team trials of 2:39 but went out too fast.
“It was not a very smart race,” she said of her first marathon win. “(The) wind was at our backs. So I thought I might as well take advantage of the wind. At the half, I thought I’d be able to hang on, but the wheels came off at 18.”
Jason Ordway, also of Bellbrook and the 2010 marathon winner, captured the half-marathon with a time of 1:05:11. He was helped when race leader Abdelaziz Atmani took a wrong turn near the end of the race.
Record finish: A 100-year-old runner became the oldest person to complete a full-distance marathon when he finished the race in Toronto in more than eight hours.
