Opposing quarterbacks beware.

When the Bengals’ three-day, mandatory minicamp ended at Paul Brown Stadium on Saturday, June 20, defensive tackle Domata Peko made a promise.

“I see us getting after the quarterback a lot more than we did before,” he said. “We’ve made good strides this offseason. We’re all working better. The D-line’s looking good.”

Hustlin’ Husker

Rookie tailback Marlon Lucky, free agent from Nebraska, caught a screen pass from Jordan Palmer and raced 30 yards down the right sideline for a TD.

Lucky joins Brian Leonard, Kenny Watson, Bernard Scott, James Johnson and DeDe Dorsey battling for roster spots behind starting tailback Cedric Benson.

“I love competition,” running backs coach Jim Anderson said. “We’ve got plenty of players. They’re more than bodies. They’re guys that can really play the game.”

Nice hands

Wide receiver Laveranues Coles caught a 50-yard TD pass from Carson Palmer — a one-handed snag in the right corner of the end zone.

“I’m trying to think of something he doesn’t do well,” Palmer said about Coles. “There’s nothing he doesn’t do well.”

Quick hitters

• PB Leap: Chad Ochocinco hauled in a 30-yard TD pass from Carson Palmer on a fade pattern down the right sideline, then leaped above the wall and into the first row of stands. The only visible sign of Chad was his football shoes and the bottoms of his bright orange sweat pants.

• Shady: On a break during special teams drills, Chris Henry plopped on a water cooler against the stadium wall near midfield. “Shade is good,” Henry said.

• Trojan horses: Former USC teammates Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga were the last players to leave the field. Both signed autographs for more than a half hour for fans who rimmed the front row near the tunnel that leads to the home locker room.

Roster moves

In addition to Scott signing a four-year contract, the Bengals announced four roster cuts.

Tight end Matt Sherry, wide receiver Mario Urrutia, quarterback Billy Farris and long-snapper James Smith were waived.

The roster stands at 81 players. The club can take 80 to training camp. Look for first-round draft pick Andre Smith to hold out.
