The Bengals announced on Wednesday, July 28, they had signed defensive end Carlos Dunlap and wide receiver Jordan Shipley.
Dunlap, from the University of Florida, was Cincinnati’s second-round choice in the 2010 draft (54th overall). Shipley, from Texas, was one of two Bengals selections in the third round (84th overall).
“It’s great to have these two guys with us as we start training camp,” said head coach Marvin Lewis. “They are high selections, and we’re looking for big things from both of them.”
Bengals players reported Wednesday to training camp, at Georgetown (Ky.) College, and the first practice is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday.
Dunlap was a playmaker the last two seasons for Florida teams that went 26-2. He logged 18.5 sacks and 24 tackles-for-loss over 2008-09 and had four blocked kicks in his three-year career. He was named defensive MVP in the 2008 season BCS national championship game, when Florida beat Oklahoma.
Shipley left Texas as the school’s all-time receptions leader (248). He ranks second in Longhorn annals in receiving yards (3,191) and TD catches (33). Also a standout kick returner, he averaged 12.5 yards on punts with three TDs and 24.6 yards on kickoffs with one TD. He played in all 53 games of his four active seasons and helped lead the team to a 45-8 record during that span.
The Bengals have signed eight of their nine draft picks. Still unsigned is first-round choice Jermaine Gresham, a tight end from Oklahoma.
Last year, the Bengals got into an impasse with first-round pick Andre Smith. The offensive tackle didn't sign until Aug. 30, missing the first three preseason games. He broke his left foot two days later. Smith ended up playing in six games, starting one of them.
