GEORGETOWN, Ky. — With Chad Ochocinco in New England, all eyes were on rookie wide receiver A.J. Green as the team opened training camp Saturday.
The Bengals are banking on their first-round prize to reach the production level of Ochocinco, and Green looked good early.
On the first pass play against defenders, Green beat veteran cornerback Leon Hall on a double move for a deep touchdown.
Overall, Green showed his athleticism by getting up the field quickly and making some difficult catches, pleasing the crowd, including many fans who already were wearing his jersey.
Quarterback Andy Dalton, the Bengals’ second-round pick, was on the throwing end of the touchdown and looked good as well.
No ‘I’ in team: Cornerback Adam Jones made headlines Friday for his bold comment about the team not having “I guys” in the locker room this season. Jones clarified his statement after practice Saturday. Or did he?
“Everybody thinks I’m trying to single out Chad (Ochocinco) and T.O. (Owens),” Jones said. “It isn’t that. We’re just doing things a lot different around here. There were certain things players did around here last year that wasn’t team-first. This year, we’re trying to do everything team-first.”
Catching up: In addition to signing cornerback Nate Clements in free agency Saturday, the Bengals — who had appeared to be lagging behind other teams in adding impact players — also secured outside linebacker Thomas Howard’s signature on a two-year contract.
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Howard, 28, has 324 career tackles, four sacks and seven interceptions. He lost his starting job last year in Oakland.
Light drawing interest: Greenville native and New England Patriots offensive tackle Matt Light is receiving interest from a number of teams. According to a source, New England is working to re-sign Light, but at least two teams are willing to make a strong run at the three-time Super Bowl champion. The Bengals are not believed to be among the teams in the hunt.
Weather delay: The first team practice was postponed due to torrential downpours, thunder, lighting and a loss of power at the facility.
