Did Reds make wise investment in Cordero?

Hot Topics

Staff report 12:42 AM Thursday, September 24, 2009

The Cincinnati Reds signed closer Francisco “Coco” Cordero to a four-year, $46 million contract when he became a free agent following the 2007 season.

Was it a wise investment considering the team remains mired in mediocrity? Probably not, but at least he’s having a good year, bidding to become the first Reds pitcher since Jeff Shaw in 1997 to lead the NL in saves. Going into play Wednesday, Sept. 23, Cordero stood one save behind San Diego’s Heath Bell, who leads the league with 39.

Reds’ single-season saves leaders

Jeff Brantley, 1996 — 44

Jeff Shaw, 1995 — 42

Danny Graves, 2004 — 41

John Franco, 1988 — 39

Coco Cordero, 2009 — 38

Juan Francisco will be in our starting lineup and will be one of our two best hitters next year. A whole year with Rolen at third will be huge; as will a whole year of Dickerson/Stubbs in center{instead of Taveras}. A healthy pitching staff will enable a serious run at the playoffs! The return to form of a couple of surgeries to our bullpen and Volquez, will prove extremely beneficial to our good fortune next season. We have everything we need, right now, to compete. We need our closer...

Like Cordero a lot, but why pay him if you are not serious about winning? Masset can do it for less.

Folks, please remember back just a few short seasons ago when all everyone wanted was a bullpen to shut the door. Doesn't anybody remember Mike Stanton blowing up just about everytime he was on the mound and the desperate attempt the Reds made with Eddie Guardardo that didn't pan out. The Reds blew so many games that year in the 8th inning. Now that we have a top notch ace out of the pen, we pay him to much? Ask the Phillies if they wish they had a top line closer that can shut the door.

Cordero maybe overpay. But in my opinion isn't about everybody. I would love to see players play because they love the game and not the money. I long for the days of the Big Red Machine and maybe this bunch of players can be that good in time.
