Glitches happen.
Just a day after Fox Sports Ohio confirmed a switching error led to the final two outs being eliminated from its broadcast of a Monday, April 13, Reds game, Marty Brennaman joked on his WLW Radio broadcast, “We never miss anything. TV may go out, but we don’t.”
Spoken too soon, apparently. With two outs left in Tuesday’s game at Milwaukee, power was cut. WLW said it was a “glitch with our long-distance carrier.” And, of course, it wouldn’t happen again.
Hopefully, the conspiracy theorists who flooded the station with reasons for the outage on Wednesday afternoon won’t happen again, either.
Madden to Collinsworth
John Madden says he’s retiring from the broadcast booth at age 73 and his distinctive style will be missed no matter how many people think otherwise. Sure, you listen to somebody talk for 30 years (no, not my wife), you may get a little tired of what they’re saying, but Madden was a fun listen.
Cris Collinsworth, his effervescent replacement, will be fun as well.
Lancing Lance
Bryant Gumbel finished another of his “Real Sports” shows on HBO this week with some strong words on cyclist Lance Armstrong, who the French are trying to ban from this year’s Tour de France after Armstrong allegedly violated testing rules for doping a month ago, when he eluded a tester to take a shower.
“In a sport notorious for the pervasiveness of doping,” Gumbel said, “Armstrong, throughout a series of accusations and denials, has always claimed he was drug free ... Armstrong has never failed a drug test ... but he’s also never quite passed the duck test ...
“Those who buy his act and think Lance is being victimized by foreigners who can’t stomach an American’s superiority ... Others ... feel that his banishment has been a long time coming. Either way, it seems that Lance Armstrong may have finally given French officials good reason to tell him not just au revoir, but also bon debarras. That’s French for good riddance.”
Tune in Silverbacks
Just a few weeks ago, the Miami Valley Silverbacks pro indoor football team was going to sit out the season. Now, the team not only is playing, but you can watch for free on MiamiCountyPost.com, which also has replay “on-demand” capability. Six games are scheduled, with the first on Sunday at 3 p.m. vs. Wheeling from Troy’s Hobart Arena.
