Quarterback controversies are brewing at opposite ends of the state. And just like their locations, the position battles are taking their teams in opposite directions.
Up north, Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini — much to his own doing — simply can’t win with his choice. Down south, University of Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly can’t lose with his.
Here’s the scorecard for Mangini so far: He let QBs Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn battle in training camp and beyond, keeping everyone in suspense right up to the kickoff to the season. Quinn won the job but was benched after just 10 quarters for Anderson, who has since led the Browns to embarrassing mediocrity.
And now, after the Browns’ bye week, Mangini isn’t telling who the signal caller will be against the Ravens on Monday, Nov. 16.
It’s an easy choice. The season is lost, so the Browns need to start building for 2010. That means Quinn. Let him play out the season. Browns fans have already seen what Anderson can — or rather can’t — do.
As for UC, Kelly has to chose between starter Tony Pike, healthy after an arm injury, and superb backup Zach Collaros. It’s not an easy choice, but I say pick Pike. Go with who got you there. Best of all, if Pike shows rust Kelly knows Collaros can come off the bench. That’s not a role Pike is accustomed to. Either way, it seems, the Bearcats can’t lose.
