DAYTON — Daequan Cook’s basketball camp could have passed for The Tonight Show with Daequan Cook.
Cook spent much of his time today — Day 2 of the camp — having fun with the kids in attendance.
As the kids returned to Dunbar High School’s gymnasium after eating lunch, Cook grasped the microphone and did some beat boxing while playfully telling the kids to “Put the balls up!”
At one point, Cook joined the campers in a 5-on-5 scrimmage, even going as far as putting on a small red jersey that the kids were wearing.
Portland Trail Blazer Greg Oden worked the camp Tuesday and spoke briefly to those in attendance. Some of the local hoop talent at the camp included Dunbar’s Geron Johnson, Jefferson’s Adreian Payne and Thurgood’s Greg Gainey.
Aside the from the drills the kids participated in, Cook and Miami Heat assistant coach David Fizdale went through a short version of Cook’s workout regimen.
Cook, a Dunbar graduate who plays for the Miami Heat, said that he feels he owes the community.
“Without this city and the support I had in this community it wouldn’t be possible to be where I am today,” he said. “So I feel like it’s an obligation for me to come back and help this community as much as possible.”
