HIGHLIGHTS: First baseman Tommy Nurre, on his first swing as a Dragon, slammed a solo homer to left field with two out in the second inning. Nurre, a 38th-round draft pick from Miami University in 2009, was called up Tuesday from extended spring training. The Cincinnati St. Xavier High School graduate debuted in front of a sellout crowd that included his parents and several other relatives.
TURNING POINT: Recent call-up Josh Garton blasted an 0-2 pitch for a three-run homer in the third, giving the Dragons a 5-3 lead. It was the cleanup hitter’s third homer in 10 games since joining the club from extended spring.
PITCHING STORY: J.C. Sulbaran, rated the Cincinnati Reds’ 25th-best prospect by Baseball America, allowed four runs on five hits in five innings for the win. He struck out four of the last six to face him. Said Dragons manager Todd Benzinger, “When he’s on, he’s among the best pitchers in this whole league.”
PROSPECT WATCH: A scout at the game identified closer Donnie Joseph as the Dragon on the fastest track to the big leagues — interesting if only because Baseball America ranks shortstop DiDi Gregorius a bit higher in the Reds system. Joseph worked the ninth, striking out two, for his fifth save.
