DAYTON — Drew Hayes, a Midwest League All-Star for the Dayton Dragons, has been selected as the top relief pitcher in Class A this season by Minor League Baseball.

Hayes appeared in 51 games with a league-leading 22 saves, a 2-2 record and a 1.35 ERA. In 60 innings, he gave up nine runs and 29 hits while striking out 89 and walking 27.

Hayes helped the Dragons establish a club record for victories as they went 83-57 and won the second-half Eastern Division title by nine games.

The season did not end well for Hayes, whose last pitch was struck for a two-run, walk-off homer by light-hitting Lansing Lugnuts second baseman Matt Nuzzo in Game 2 of a first-round MWL playoff series. The Dragons had been one out from winning the series. Lansing eventually won it two games to one.
