Geneva, Ill.—Matt Fairel allowed just one run over seven strong innings to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 4-2 victory over the Kane County Cougars in the first game of a three-game series on Saturday night. The Dragons have won six of their last seven games.
Fairel (8-5) allowed six hits and only one walk while striking out six to win his second straight start. He allowed only three runners past first base over seven innings.
Josh Fellhauer and Miguel Rojas each provided two-run singles for the Dragons, and relievers Ezequiel Infante and Donnie Joseph each pitched one inning following Fairel, to improve the Dragons record on their current road trip to 3-1. Joseph notched his first save with the Dragons by working the ninth. He allowed one run in the inning on one hit with a strikeout.
The Dragons got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Fellhauer delivered a two-out, two-run single to right field to give Dayton a 2-0 lead. In the third, Rojas singled in two more runs to put the Dragons in front 4-0.
Kane County scored its only run against Fairel in the third inning on an RBI single by Dusty Coleman. Infante replaced Fairel in the eighth and allowed a lead-off single but got a double play ball to help him out of trouble.
In the bottom of the ninth with Dayton leading 4-1, Joseph allowed a lead-off triple to Franklin Hernandez, who scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2. With one out, Dusty Napoleon struck out on a 3-2 pitch in the dirt but reached safely on a wild pitch to bring the tying run to the plate. Carlos Arrieche grounded to third and Napoleon was forced at second, but Dayton second baseman Kevyn Feiner threw wildly to first trying to complete the double play and Arrieche went to second with two out on the error. Leonardo Gil hit a slow ground ball that Rojas fielded at short and his throw to first nipped Gil to end the game as the Cougars argued the call furiously and Gil was handed a post-game ejection.
The Dragons (13-15, 41-57) play at Kane County (13-15, 54-44) todau at 3 p.m. Curtis Partch (7-7, 4.68) will start for Dayton. The next home game at Fifth Third Field in Dayton is Tuesday, July 28th against the Peoria Chiefs.
