Appleton, Wisc. — Derrick McPhearson scored from first base on a bunt single and a two-base throwing error by Dayton pitcher Mark James in the bottom of the 11th inning, as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers broke a 4-4 tie to defeat the Dragons 5-4 on Friday night. The Dragons loss snapped their five game winning streak as Wisconsin avoided a sweep of the three game series.

With one out in the bottom of the 11th, McPhearson reached on an infield single to the left side.

Juan Sanchez followed with a bunt up the third base line that James fielded. He made a rushed throw to first that was wide of the bag and went into the bullpen area, easily allowing McPhearson to score to end the game.

The loss spoiled a ninth inning comeback by the Dragons. Trailing 4-3 going into the ninth, Dayton tied the game when Kevyn Feiner singled to center, collecting his third of four hits he would deliver on the night, and went to second on Josh Fellhauer’s sacrifice.

A wild pitch moved Feiner to third and with two outs, Byron Wiley lined a single to right to bring in Feiner and tie the game.

It was an uphill battle for the Dragons. Wisconsin scored a run in the bottom of the first inning before Dayton’s Tony Brown tied the game in the top of the second with a two-out, solo home run, his third homer of the year.

The Timber Rattlers regained the lead with two runs in the second and then added another run in the fourth to jump ahead 4-1.

Dayton started back in the sixth. Cody Puckett reached on a bunt single to start the inning, raced to third on an error, and scored on Kevin Coddington’s ground out. Tony Brown then doubled to right and scored on Feiner’s double off the left field fence to make it 4-3.

Dragons starting pitcher Lance Janke worked five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Dragons reliever Mark Serrano tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five.

Dayton’s Josh Fellhauer went 0 for 5 as his 14-game hitting streak came to an end. The hitting streak was the longest for a Dragons player over the last four seasons.

Dayton finished with 11 hits. Feiner went 4 for 5 to lead the way while Brown, and Carlos Mendez each had two. Brown extended his hitting streak to nine straight games despite being ejected in the eighth inning after being called out on strikes.

The Dragons (12-15, 40-57) play at Kane County (13-14, 54-43) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Matt Fairel (7-5, 3.04) will start for Dayton. The next home game at Fifth Third Field in Dayton is Tuesday, July 28 against the Peoria Chiefs.
