BELLBROOK — Dayton Dutch Lions FC coach Ivar van Dinteren used a term from his native tongue after his team earned its first point of the USL Pro season Friday.
Kolby LaCrone’s 59th-minute goal left the Lions with a 1-1 draw against the Los Angeles Blues, which both satisfied the coach and left him wanting.
“Het smaakt naar meer,” said van Dinteren, which loosely translates to having a taste for more.
“I need to compliment the guys. It’s incredible how they fought.”
Trailing 1-0, the Lions produced their first goal in three matches when LaCrone ran onto a ball from George Davis IV and coolly chipped Blues goalkeeper Oscar Dautt.
“George won a great tackle and the ball popped out in front of me,” said the 24-year-old from Zanesville, who leads the team with two goals. “I tried to chip him and it worked.
“Any result tonight was good and especially coming against the first-place team (in the National Division). It’s huge for us.”
LaCrone was a threat throughout the match, and he was subbed late for Kyle Segebart, who played up front and had two chances at a winner.
DDL’s management has promised attractive soccer and the players showed glimpses of it and aggression in a strong second half.
“We went for the win and almost got it,” said van Dinteren. “It’s difficult to lose four straight games and be one down. But they stayed focused and composed.”
The Lions have had little good fortune recently and they were playing catch up just six minutes in after a highlight-reel goal. L.A. midfielder Jhonatan Bravo stunned everyone in Miami Valley South Stadium with a thumping volley from 30 yards out that keeper Jesper Leerdam had no chance to stop.
“We started good but that goal was marvelous,” the coach said.
