BELLBROOK — Two matches, zero points.
It’s not where the newly promoted Dayton Dutch Lions expected to be, but a 3-2 loss to the Rochester Rhinos at Miami Valley South Stadium on Saturday left them in a big hole at the start of its first USL Pro season.
Down 3-1, Dayton rallied late with a goal from defender and former Cedarville University player Kyle Segebart in the 88th minute. A Joe Tait free kick moments later came close to the top corner, and Tait then narrowly missed beating goalkeeper Neal Kitson with headers twice in added time.
“We showed a good mentality,” coach Ivar van Dinteren said of DDL’s efforts to close the match. “In the second half, there was a different spirit. We never gave up, and that’s important.”
“There’s a performance level we’re not used to,” Segebart said. “... They play smash-mouth soccer, and beating that with our style is the adjustment we have to make.”
Despite the late flurry, the physical Rhinos dominated with waves of attacks and bagged the eventual winner in the 71st minute when Anthony Hamilton controlled the ball in Dayton’s end and lifted a ball over goalkeeper Jesper Leerdam.
Lima native George Davis IV opened the scoring for the Lions in a sequence that began when he struck a hard shot from 20 yards out. Rochester was unable to clear, and in the 9th minute, the striker converted a header, his first of the season, off of a well-struck corner by midfielder Julius Willie.
Rochester responded quickly when Alfonso Motagalvan scored in the 13th minute. The Rhinos continued to create opportunities, forcing Leerdam into a fine stretch save. They were inches away from a 2-1 lead in the 30th minute, but striker Kendall Jagdeosingh’s header rang off the crossbar. Moments later, Rochester’s Tony Donatelli hit another post.
The Rhinos got the go-ahead goal in added time of the first half, when Banks took advantage of a miscommunication between defenders and placed a low shot into the net.
“If it’s 45 minutes on the clock and they score, that’s hard on the confidence,” said van Dinteren.
