KETTERING — Kyle Brossia of Findlay was 4 over par after his first three holes of Thursday’s third round at the Ohio Amateur Championship.

Then he holed a 115-yard second shot on No. 4 for an eagle, and playing partner Michael Schmitmeyer joked to him, “Now you’ll have three eagles in a row.”

What a call.

Brossia followed his approach on No. 4 with a chip-in for eagle on the par-5 fifth hole and a 20-foot putt for a third consecutive eagle on the par-5 sixth.

That put him at 2 under for the round, and he went on to shoot 77 for a 10-over 223 after the third round at NCR Country Club’s South Course.

“Which is pretty bad for three (straight) eagles,” Brossia joked afterward. “But it’s still something I’ll always remember, that’s for sure.”

Longtime Ohio Am officials said it’s the first time they can remember a golfer scoring three consecutive eagles at the event. Brossia’s three eagles were the only three carded on the course Thursday, and No. 4, where he holed his approach from 115 yards, was the second-toughest hole of the day, with just one eagle and three birdies.

The former University of Findlay golfer received persistent cellphone calls as word of his accomplishment spread. Especially nerve-wracking was the putt for the third eagle on No. 6, for which he had to wait about 10 minutes while another player received a ruling in a hazard.

“Just snuck it in the right side,” he said.

Midway leader frustrated: Korey Ward of West Chester Twp., a recent Lakota West High School graduate and a former two-time Ohio high school Division I state champion, led the Ohio Am at 5-under entering Thursday. He shot 4-over 75, but he remained in today’s final group three shots behind leader Michael Bernard of Huber Heights.

“I played awful, honestly,” he said. “I did everything bad. I putted bad and hit my irons really bad.”

WSU coach in hunt: Pete Samborsky is 37 years old, which makes him the odd man out among seven players at even par or better entering today’s final round. The other six members of that group average 19 years old.

Samborsky, the Wright State golf coach, shot 2-over 73 on Thursday and stands tied for fourth place at even par. He’ll play in the second-to-last group today.

“I left a couple out there,” Samborsky said. “The first hole I knocked it to 12 feet, putted right to the throat and missed. That kind of set the tone.”

Scohy rebounds: Jeff Scohy, an NCR member and Bellbrook resident who played in last year’s U.S. Amateur, rallied from opening rounds of 2-over 73 and 6-over 77 to shoot 1-over 72 in tougher conditions on Thursday. He stands 9 over.

“The pressure was off,” Scohy said. “I thought I could make a run, and I put together a nice round.”

Miami Valley represented: Four Dayton-area players remain in the field: Bernard (-4), Samborsky (even), Ben Boyer, Dayton (+2) and Scohy (+9).

Making the cut: The 60 players in the third round were cut to 40 for today’s final round, which begins at 8 a.m. Scores of 13-over or better made the cut.

Etc.: The easiest hole Thursday was the par-5 6th (545 yards), on which players scored one eagle (Brossia’s), 14 birdies.
