1. Fairmont is not fond of playing Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame. Last season, the Firebirds finished 22-4, and three of those losses were to the eventual Division I state champion, by 18, 14 and 17 points. Senior Cassie Sant, the University of Dayton-bound post player, will again lead Fairmont into any possible meeting this season.

2. Conditioning will be paramount when playing Northmont. With all five starters returning from an eight-win team, the Thunderbolts are hoping to use their nonstop offense to make a statement in the GWOC Central Division, normally dominated by Beavercreek and Fairmont. “I like to call it controlled chaos,” fourth-year coach Matt Adams said.

3. Someone should get a hand in Katie Schubert’s face. The Springboro sophomore led the GWOC last year with a 47.5 3-point percentage in averaging 8.8 points per game. She could serve as an outside scorer and let 6-foot-1 junior Olivia Schretzman do some work down low for the Panthers.

4. Eight was enough for Bellbrook in the SWBL Southwest Division. That’s how many consecutive division titles the Golden Eagles won until Brookville took top honors last season. With a brutal schedule that includes D-I opponents Vandalia Butler, Fairborn, Fairmont and Xenia, the Eagles will certainly be league and postseason tournament tested. Brookville isn’t going to give up the title easily and Oakwood wouldn’t mind getting in on the action, too.

5. Among others, Fort Loramie has its eyes on the prize this season. The Redskins have come close to playing in the state tournament the past two seasons, reaching the D-IV regional semifinal last season and the regional final in 2007-08. The road to Columbus starts tonight and ends on March 18-20 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State University. Game on.
