Dr. Tim Quinn’s wallet is safe for another week.

One of the area’s best known orthopedic surgeons has said he’ll buy Chris Borland dinner if Borland can break the Alter High School shot put record.

Quinn set the record with an effort of 60-feet, 9-inches more than 40 years ago. Borland won the Dayton Division II shot put championship Saturday, May 23, at Welcome Stadium, throwing a district record 60-7.

Last week the 6-foot, 210-pound Borland broke the 60-foot barrier for the first time, going 60-8 at the Greater Catholic League North Division meet.

“I don’t pay much attention to distances, but it felt good to go over 60 feet,” said Borland, who is headed to the University of Wisconsin on a football scholarship. “Not a lot of guys have done it.

“Winning the district and getting the record is nice. I still want to get the school record and do better than I did (fifth place) last year at state.

“I know Dr. Quinn is following what I’m doing and rooting for me to break his record.”

Like all of the top four finishers in the district, Borland advances to next week’s regional meet.

• Stivers won the first district team championship in school history with 104 points to 89 for Chaminade Julienne and 79 for Valley View.

The Tigers got big points in the 800 meters with Sean Pettiford (1:59.16) coming in first and Marcus Jordan (1:59.69) to open a 17-point lead CJ couldn’t overcome.

Other Stivers first places came from JaShawn Combs in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.96), Nathan Davis in the high jump (6-4) and 800 and 1,600 relays.

CJ had the only D-II boys double winner in junior Laron Brown III in the 100 meters (11.07) and 200 (22.66). He was also third in the 400 (49.94).

• Alter placed in 14 of 17 events to win its sixth consecutive girls D-II district trophy with 134.5 points. Oakwood was second with 100.

Winners for the Knights were Rebecca Esselstein in the 800 (2:19.36), Olivia Albers in the 1,600 (5:18.87) and the 1,600 (4:04.46) and 3,200 (district record 9:30.77) relay teams.

Oakwood’s champions were sophomore Kelsey McDonald in the 400 (59.89) and Julie Sizek in the 3,200 (11.56.41).

• Bethel’s Kylie Kopp had an outstanding day in the Division III girls district meet.

She set event records while winning the 100 hurdles (15.56) and long jump (18-1) along with taking the 200 (26.83) and getting third in the 400 (60.45).

“The long jump still amazes me,” she said. “I figured I might reach 18 feet maybe my sophomore year in college. But I hit the board just right, got great height and was out there.”

Kopp will run her college track for Wright State.

Miami Valley won the girls D-III team title with 106 points to 90 for Bethel. Elaina Cromer set a district record for the Rams in the 400 meters in 57.90 seconds.

Keta Burke-Williams helped Miami Valley by winning the 100, getting second in the long jump and third in the high.

Cedarville’s Katie Bunker broke the girls district record the 800, running 2:18.43, 12 seconds ahead of the second-place runner.

• Mechanicsburg was the D-III boys team winner with 111 points to 83 for Yellow Springs.

Keith Hurst paced the champs, winning the 110 and 300 hurdles, the high jump and getting third in the long jump.

Kyle Abney of Dayton Christian set a district record in the D-III shot put at 54-6 1/2.
