RIVERSIDE — Carroll fed off the energy created by the school’s first girls basketball sellout Tuesday night to overwhelm Alter, 53-31.
Both teams entered the renewal of this longtime rivalry undefeated (Carroll 5-0, Alter 7-0). Carroll is No. 1 in the Dayton Daily News Division II ratings, while Alter is No. 3.
Carroll’s gym holds almost 1,100, and almost every seat was filled an hour before the game.
“We were just so pumped and so ready to play before the game,” said Carroll’s Susan Wollenhaupt, who had 13 points and nine rebounds. “It was electric.”
The Patriots began by playing what coach Rob Berry called “the best defensive quarter we’ve played in the nine years I’ve coached here. We smothered them. They couldn’t move. They couldn’t make a pass. They could not get a good shot. I don’t know how we can play better on the defensive end.”
Carroll led 17-1 with 22 seconds to go in the first quarter. In Alter’s 16 possessions in the quarter, the Knights were 1-for-8 shooting, had six turnovers and were 1-for-4 from the free-throw line. Their first basket came with 19 seconds left in the quarter.
“They are just so long on defense, really move their feet and keep their hands up,” said Alter coach Chris Hart. “They pretty much took away everything we tried. That’s about as good a defensive quarter anyone has played against us.”
Alter, which started two freshmen and two sophomores, recovered a bit in the second quarter to pull within 27-18 at halftime.
But Carroll turned up the defense again in the second half, holding Alter to 4-of-19 shooting. For the game, the Knights shot 22.8 percent.
Kelley Austria had 16 points, six rebounds and four steals. Her cousin, Allison Bockrath, had seven points as did Katie Bilinski to pace Alter.
“Great game to win in this atmosphere,” said Berry. “You never know how your kids will react to a big crowd against a big rival. But I can’t believe how well we played on defense.”
