Springboro’s boys basketball team won an 84-75 shootout in Xenia on Friday to improve to 5-0 and 3-0 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference South.
The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in the area in Division I, looked nothing like a team that was shooting 56 percent from the free-throw line entering the game, as they went 28-for-33 from the stripe.
Six-foot-10 center Maverick Morgan paced the Panthers, going 13-for-15 from the line and scoring 27 points. Four others scored in double figures for Springboro, including Ryan Murray, who had 14 and Jack Mapes, who had 11 and went 6-for-6 from the line.
Three-point shooting kept Xenia in the game, but it wasn’t enough to pull the upset. Cody Phillippi led the way for the Buccaneers with 24 points, including five 3-pointers, and Dominique Tucker added 20 points and three triples.
Ponitz 58, Stivers 57: The Golden Panthers notched their first win in thrilling fashion thanks to a 31-point night by sophomore guard Wesley Harris.
In a back-and-forth game, Ponitz clung to a one-point advantage with less than a minute to go. Not about to go down easy, Stivers retook the lead with 10 seconds remaining as Khristopher Riddell scored and got fouled on the shot. He didn’t make the free throw, though, which gave the Golden Panthers a shot at the win.
As time dwindled, Harris came off a high screen and drove to the hoop, making a layup as time expired to put the perfect cap on his extraordinary performance.
Fairborn 73, Lebanon 59: A big fourth-quarter run lifted Fairborn to its fourth win despite another great performance from Lebanon’s Ben Esposito.
Leading by four going into the final quarter, the Skyhawks put the game out of reach by outscoring the Warriors 21-11. Fairborn had three players in double figures, led by Kendrick Williams’ 21.
Esposito, who has scored 64 points over the Warriors’ past three games, tied his season high with 27.
Tippecanoe 40, Bellefontaine 37: After a big run in the third quarter put the Chieftans up by seven, the Red Devils needed to find some offense in what had, to that point, largely been a defensive struggle.
Tipp’s Brandon Ervin provided that boost on both ends of the court, snagging six defensive rebounds in the second half and finishing the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Buoyed by Ervin’s play, the Red Devils went on an 18-8 run to end the game and eked out their second win while dropping the Chieftans to 3-2.
Bellefontaine’s Connor McClure led all scorers with 15 points.
