A run to the Division IV football state championship game has helped Alter High School land three players on the D-IV All-Ohio first team, and senior safety Cody Byers was named the co-defensive player of the year in the state, according to the teams released Tuesday, Dec. 1.
Tavion Wright, a Marshall senior running back who gained 2,245 yards as part of a powerful Cougars rushing attack, was named the state’s D-IV offensive player of the year. Wright averaged 17.8 yards per carry and scored 32 touchdowns.
Joining Byers on the D-IV first team were senior offensive lineman Ryan Cronin and senior defensive lineman Thomas Armstrong. Knights defensive lineman Chris Bockrath was named to the D-IV second team.
Byers, Armstrong and Bockrath are part of a Knights defense that has allowed just 13 points in four playoff games and shut out its first two postseason opponents. Top-ranked Alter (14-0) faces No. 3 Chagrin Falls (14-0) in the 11 a.m. Saturday title game at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium.
Seth Millar, the Waynesville senior running back, also was named to the D-IV second team.
In D-III, Tippecanoe, which advanced to the second round of the playoffs, placed punter Kyle Pignatiello on the second team and offensive lineman John Bruce on the third team. Eaton running back Dalton Caudill and Franklin defensive lineman Eric Hildenbrand joined Bruce on the D-III third team.
