When Beavercreek High School coach John Guiliano says his team fought hard for Tuesday night’s Division I regional semifinal boys soccer victory over Cincinnati St. Xavier, it’s not just a line.
The Beavers, who won 2-1 on penalty kicks at Sycamore High School after Zackary Apple’s goal tied it with 2:46 to play in regulation, had two goals overturned as a result of offside calls and another denied when a penalty kick hit the crossbar in regulation.
“The kids really deserved this,” Guiliano said. “It was a tough game, a real emotional win.”
Goalkeeper Alex Gill stopped three of the four St. Xavier shooters in the penalty-kick phase as the Beavers improved to 20-0-1.
Beavercreek’s road continues Saturday against Lakota West at Bellbrook in the regional final. Lakota West advanced by beating Milford 2-1 in overtime.
Carroll 1, Wyoming 0: Trae’ Collins knocked in a pass from Vonne Byrd with 3:32 left in regulation to send the Patriots to a 1-0 regional semifinal victory over Cincinnati Wyoming (13-4-3) at Centerville High School.
Carroll (20-0-0) allowed 12 shots on goal as goalkeeper Noah Kummer recorded his 10th shutout of the season.
The top-ranked team in Division II, Carroll squares off against Fenwick on Saturday in the regional final. That game was originally scheduled to take place at Hilliard Bradley but is being relocated to a venue closer to both schools. That site will be announced today.
Fenwick 4, Bexley 0: Mark Andrew scored all four goals, off assists from Matt Loh, Tanner Coffman, Zach Eckert and Michael Popson, as Fenwick blanked Columbus Bexley in the Division II regional semifinal matchup at Wayne’s Heidkamp Stadium.
Andrew scored two goals in the first half — the first roughly five minutes into the contest and the second with nine minutes to go until the half. The third and fourth goals happened within a minute of each other, with Andrew scoring with 18:22 and 17:23 left to play.
Dayton Christian 3, Springfield Catholic Central 0: Dayton Christian scored three goals in the final 30 minutes in a Division III regional semifinal win over Springfield Catholic Central at Fairborn High School.
DC senior Christian Alexander broke a scoreless tie 12 minutes into the second half. He got a foot on a long cross and deflected it from the left side into the top of the goal on the right.
The game started 30 minutes late because the Catholic Central bus was involved in an accident on I-70. No one was injured.
