RIVERSIDE — This time there was no question about the Beavercreek High School football team defeating Carroll.
The Beavers scored on their first five possessions en route to a 42-13 victory Friday, Sept. 4, as an estimated 5,500 fans packed Carroll Stadium for the Dayton Daily News Game of the Week.
Creek (2-0) unofficially got 445 yards of total offense from its starters.
Using only three running plays, the pitch sweep, fullback dive and quarterback draw, four different runners combined for 316 yards rushing. Quarterback Tim Carroll was 5-for-6 passing in the first half for 129 yards and a 35-yard TD pass to Cory Lundy.
It was 35-0 before Carroll quarterback Thomas Milord scored on a 3-yard run with 57.7 seconds left in the first half. A recovered fumble by Carroll defensive end Ben Lange on the Creek 4 set up the score.
That was Carroll’s only offensive flicker in the first half as the Patriots struggled for 13 yards rushing and 18 yards passing.
It was a much different scene than 2008. Creek’s 26-23 win broke a 12-year losing streak to Carroll. In that contest, the Patriots had a fourth-and-goal from the 2 in the last two minutes.
A running play into the line created a controversy that had lasted a year. Creek fans say their defense stopped the play. Carroll fans say their man scored and they were robbed by the officials.
That ending provided some lively verbal jousting, both face-to-face and on the Internet.
“Feels good to finally leave no doubt,” said Carroll, who rushed for 72 yards including a 44-yard quarterback draw to open the scoring. “We felt like we could run wide against them and opened up the middle.”
Ryan Malone scored on runs of 15 and 8 yards going wide. Lundy added a 13-yard score following the same path, and Gabriel Henry scored on an 8-yard run up the middle.
Carroll (1-1), which has suspect speed on the outside, didn’t help itself playing way off the line. That allowed the speedy Creek backs to get to open field unchallenged.
“All of our receivers did a good job blocking when they weren’t carrying the ball,” Creek coach Scott Clodfelter said. “That allowed us to get wide.
“Our defense did a nice job. It’s a real nice win considering the close games we’ve had with Carroll the last few years.”
