BELLBROOK — Nathan Coffey will never forget the first catch of his varsity high school football career.

The 6-foot-5 sophomore caught the winning two-point conversion as Bellbrook defeated Xenia 22-21 in overtime in the Dayton Daily News Game of the Week on Friday night. It was the third time in four years the contest between the Greene County rivals has gone to overtime.

Bellbrook’s P.J. Eckley scored on a 1-yard run on the Golden Eagles’ first OT possession to get his team within 21-20. The Eagles’ kicking game had struggled, so going for two and the win seemed like a sound decision.

Coffey lined up on the right side and was the third receiver in the pattern. Eckley rolled to his left and got massive pressure from the Xenia defense.

“I saw Nathan coming open across the back of the end zone and just threw it up where he could go get it,” said Eckley, who got crushed by the Xenia defense and didn’t see the catch, but heard the reaction of his teammates.

“I just kind of floated across the back of the end zone and saw P.J. was getting pressure,” said Coffey. “I knew he would put it up high like he does in practice. So I just got inside position on the defender and went up after it, grabbed it and hung on.”

Xenia led 14-6 late in the fourth. The Bucs had scored in the first quarter on a 25-yard pass from Zack Newsome to Zane Moore and in the second on a 92-yard kickoff return by James Sanford.

Bellbrook’s first TD came on an 11-yard run by Eckley, who rushed for 171 yards on 34 carries and was 6-for-20 passing for 46 yards. The Eagles had the ball inside the Xenia 30 four times in the second half but were slowed by mistakes and penalties.

They got the ball with 6:14 left in regulation when Tim Lovett recovered a fumble on the Xenia 49. Twelve plays later, the Eagles scored with 1:04 left on a 7-yard pass from Eckley to Alex Oldham.

Newsock hit Moore for a 20-yard TD pass and Kole Patterson kicked the extra point to give Xenia a 21-14 lead in overtime.
