The largest area regular-season cross country invitational is once again the Kiwanis-Treaty City run at Greenville. The event will take place on Saturday at the city park on Memorial Drive (off East Water Street).

Racing is from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event annually draws more than 2,000 competitors.

Many area cross country teams that don’t trek to Greenville will run at the Miamisburg or Lebanon invites. Miamisburg racing starts with varsity girls at 9 a.m. and varsity boys at 9:45 a.m. The course is located at Medlar View Elementary, 4400 Medlar Road.

The Lebanon Inv. begins at
8:30 a.m. at the high school.

Fast start: Fairborn’s girls soccer team, which averaged 5.6 wins in the past five seasons, started 4-0 by defeating Stebbins, Springfield, Greenon and Tecumseh.

The opening streak was stopped on Wednesday with a 5-0 loss to Northmont. The Skyhawks continue to claim the GWOC’s top two players in points — sophomore Erika Watts (four goals, five assists) and freshman Aaliyah Patten (four goals, four assists).

Major week: The Alter volleyball team took two significant early season tests this week. On Tuesday, the Knights faced Ursuline, the Cincinnati power that has advanced to the Division I state semifinals in each of the past three seasons and won a title in 2009. Alter lost in three sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17.

The next night, Alter took on Tippecanoe. Those teams have faced off in each of the past three D-II regionals, with Alter sweeping. The Knights topped Tippecanoe 25-20, 25-18, 25-21.

On deck: Beavercreek will host Perrysburg in a great nonleague boys soccer game at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Perrysburg, near Toledo, was 15-2-2 last season. The Beavers were 13-3-3 last year and enter the contest 3-0.

Also, Bellbrook will be a Chaminade Julienne for an 11:30 a.m. volleyball contest on Saturday.
