BROOKVILLE — Through last season, even after the girls basketball games during which she often carried the load as her team’s star, Courtney Boyd would get home to an inbox full of recruiting e-mails.
Out of politeness, she would answer each.
“Some would just say, ‘Happy holidays,’ or some would ask, ‘What’s the best game we can see?’ and some would just say, ‘Send us your schedule,’ ” said Boyd, the Brookville High School senior.
Sometimes up to 25 per day, Boyd would happily type a response.
“It was almost like having another class,” she said.
Free of those obligations and with the common realization that this season is her last in high school, Boyd is scoring at a phenomenal rate. In helping Brookville to a 6-0 start, Boyd had scored 40 points in consecutive games against Milton-Union and Arcanum and pushed her season scoring average to 35.9.
But for those who think those numbers sound like attention only to scoring, consider this: Boyd also averages 14 rebounds, 4.8 steals and shoots 54.7 percent from the field (41.6 percent from 3-point range).
Boyd’s play has increased enthusiasm for her coming move to Wright State, where the 6-foot-1 guard/forward will take her aggressiveness to the boards and a scoring touch at its peak.
“Some people probably think, ‘Oh, she’s shooting 5,000 times per game,’ but she’s not like that at all,” said Brookville coach Jayme Boston. “As a team, we’re averaging 75 points, and in three games the starters haven’t played the fourth quarter.”
In the past four games, as Boyd has helped Brookville win by an average of 37.5 points, she has collected 38, 30, 40 and 40 points as a serious threat from all over the floor. It helps that the team is acclimated to second-year coach Boston, and point guard Rachel Drinnon is dishing out double-digits in assists on some nights.
Plus, Boyd is creating many of her own points with offensive rebounding, sometimes even on her own misses.
Talking about her numbers while on a holiday trip to visit friends and family, Boyd sounded almost shy about her scoring numbers.
“Sometimes it’s like I’m not sure what’s going on,” Boyd said.
But those in the Southwestern Buckeye League certainly do, particularly as Boyd steamrolls her scoring machine into league play, where Brookville finished a combined 41-19 the past three seasons. Now, the question shifts to this: Just how much can she score?
“She just has a drive this year,” Boston said. “She has the signing out of the way, and she’s able to concentrate on playing, so she’s playing well.”
