It seemed like a third overtime was all but certain after Bellbrook High School retied the game with 2.8 seconds to go in its boys basketball game against Oakwood.
However, the Lumberjacks threw the ensuing inbounds pass out of bounds to give the Golden Eagles one last chance.
Senior center Josh Easter couldn’t get his shot to go, but senior forward Alex Gertz was there for the put back. He beat the buzzer to give Bellbrook (7-10) at 57-55 victory in double overtime.
Gertz led the Eagles with 16 points, going 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Junior Doug Rasch added 14, including three 3-pointers.
Oakwood (5-12) did most of its damage from the free-throw line, where it hit 28-of-36. Senior Trent Jervis topped all scorers with 19 points, with 13 coming from the charity stripe.
Jefferson 52, Beavercreek 49: After rattling off eight wins in a row to close out January, Beavercreek has struggled since the calendar flipped to February.
The Beavers (13-4), currently the area’s top-ranked D-I team, dropped their second successive game on Tuesday to Jefferson (14-4), the area’s third-ranked team in D-III.
The Broncos started strong out of the gate to put the Beavers in an early seven-point hole. Beavercreek then chipped away throughout the game, and with three minutes left the score was tied.
Jefferson showed just how good it is, though, by holding on to earn a hard-fought road win.
Senior Devin Foster led the Broncos’ attack, scoring 16 points including four 3-pointers.
Sophomore center Tyler Reasoner had a strong game for the Beavers, scoring 16 points.
Fairmont 57, Fairborn 49: The Firebirds (7-10) spread the ball around well and shot over 50 percent from the field to upset the Skyhawks (10-7).
Jordan Glaser had 13 points for Fairmont while Kendrick Williams led Fairborn with 27.
Franklin 84, Brookville 21: Wildcats freshman Luke Kennard recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Dayton Christian 65, Yellow Springs 31: Dayton Christian senior Lisa Weber scored 18 points to put her over 1,500 for her career. She is now the leading scorer — male or female — in school history.
