SPRINGBORO — The Springboro offense sputtered for four quarters in its season opener but found some momentum in overtime to seize a 13-10 win over visiting Fairfield.
The Panthers’ Antoin Campbell gutted his way seven yards to the end zone on the fifth play of overtime. Springboro handed him the ball on all five plays in the extra period.
“We felt like we had found the series of plays we needed to put it in the end zone,” Springboro coach Ryan Wilhite said. “Nothing fancy, just trying to smash it in.”
Springboro nearly didn’t have a chance to win the game with power football.
After forcing Fairfield to punt with 1:26 left in regulation and the scored tied 7-7, receiver Ryan Alvey fumbled the kick.
The Indians’ Ray Gordon fell on the ball on the Springboro 19-yard line with 1:15 left.
The Indians took the clock down to 2.1 seconds leaving kicker Josh Pfaff with an opportunity for the win.
His kick sailed wide, sending the home fans at CareFlight Field into a frenzy.
Pfaff got some redemption by splitting the uprights to open overtime and give the Tribe a 10-7 lead.
“We were just trying to find ways to get guys the ball in overtime and trying to score points,” Fairfield coach Aaron Fitzstephens said.
Fairfield opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 72-yard touchdown pass from Justin McCray to C.J. Tally for a 7-0 lead.
Springboro’s Taylor Franz scored on a 9-yard run to tie the game in the fourth quarter.
