Jeff Stiver had built Valley View’s girls soccer team into one of the Southwestern Buckeye League’s most consistently strong programs, but he knew he needed to step away last year.
Stiver’s family experienced a number of health issues over a five-year period, and that took its toll on him mentally and physically.
“I coached in 2008 and ’09, but I felt tired and beat down,” he said. “I knew the only way to re-energize myself was to take a year off.”
The three-time SWBL coach of the year left the Spartan sidelines, but stayed close by announcing for the team.
The one year off did wonders, and Stiver is back in a familiar situation after being named as head coach at Carlisle High School.
“It will be another rebuilding process, but it is one that I am certainly excited about,” he said.
“It is very close to Germantown, it is in the same league that I’m very familiar with, and it is about the same size school with the same small-school setting,” said Stiver.
While heading the Valley View program from 1994 through 2009, Stiver compiled a 163-102-20 record with league titles in 2000 and 2005.
He equates his starting point at Carlisle with his third or fourth year at Valley View.
“They manage to win four-to-seven games about every year, but have never been able to consistently field a winning program,” he said. “It has been some time since they have had a winning season.”
Stiver is not daunted by the challenge with the Indians.
“If I can get the players to buy into what I’m selling and work at it, I think we can turn the corner fairly quickly,” he said.

Pirates tangle in
 wild twinbill
Was there a wilder doubleheader this high school baseball season than West Carrollton’s two games against different opponents?
“Wild was an understatement,” Pirates coach Scott Helter said after his team’s showing at the Western Brown Invitational.
West Carrollton lost to Edgewood 14-13 in the first game, then came from behind for a 14-13 win over Edgewood in the second game.
Pitching and defense aside, Helter was able to glow about his team’s offense.
“The nice thing about the weekend is that we recorded 27 hits in two games and had two homers and eight or nine doubles,” he said.
In the first game, Chaz Coy had a grand slam and had six RBI, and Nick Schultz also homered.
In the second game, West Carrollton recovered from deficits of 5-0 and 11-4.
“We made a heck of a comeback to tie it with seven runs in the fifth and eventually win in the bottom of the seventh with a bases-loaded single,” he said.
“It was a crazy day.”
