COLUMBUS — The Division II boys high school state soccer championship came down to No. 1 vs. No. 2 — Carroll vs. Richfield Revere in a rematch of last season’s title game.

Carroll left no doubt about the best D-II team in Ohio.

The state poll champ and now state champion Patriots dominated the pitch at Columbus Crew Stadium for a 3-0 win Friday, taking back to Dayton the D-II title for the second straight season and third time in four years.

In 2010, the teams combined for four second-half goals in Carroll’s 3-2 win. So junior forward Trae’ Collins’ score in the 38th minute — just two minutes before the half — was the unexpected winner Friday.

The Patriots (23-0-0) didn’t let up in the second half and added a pair of goals on senior Matt Barnes’ penalty kick (68th minute) and senior Austin Neumeier’s laser (77th minute) from the top of the penalty box arc that sneaked just below the cross bar.

Carroll’s defense — led by seniors Barnes, Jon Trapp, Kyle Shelton and freshman keeper Noah Kummer — made it stand as the Patriots (36-0-1 in their last 37 games) posted their 14th shutout and sixth of the postseason.

“Defense has always been strong this year,” Barnes said. “We knew our offense would come along. We were passing it around them. We just needed to finish the game.”

Barnes took care of that with 12:53 left. Junior Patrick Raiff, a step inside the penalty box, blasted a shot on goal that hit a Revere defender for a handball call.

On his penalty shot, Barnes stutter-stepped, and when the keeper dove to Barnes’ left, Barnes rolled the ball into the right corner.

“The problem was it was a shot on frame and it hit (the defender’s) arm,” Carroll coach Scott Molfenter said of the shot that had a chance to score without the contact. “The ref, his hands were tied. I think he had to call it.”

Revere’s comeback chances were almost nil considering the Minutemen (18-1-4) finished with as many shots as Carroll had goals and didn’t get their first shot until five minutes into the second half. The Patriots, meanwhile,
peppered Revere’s defense with 20 shots (six on goal).

“Last year we were able to attack them a little bit,” Revere coach Sandor Jakab said. “This year we picked the wrong game to stall out a little bit, but give Carroll credit for that.”

On Carroll’s first score, junior Zach Zwiesler took possession just inside Revere’s half of the field. He dribbled through three Revere players then passed the ball by two more to Collins. Collins sent a low shot from 12 yards out just inside the far post and past Revere’s diving keeper.

“He does it all the time,” Collins said of Zwiesler’s run. “I wasn’t really surprised at all because he’s a really good player. ... I had to put it away.”

And in doing so, the Patriots tucked away their fourth boys
soccer title in school history.
