Carroll is the No. 1 girls Division II high school basketball team in the state. But staying there is another thing.
“Even though we’re No. 1 now, it’ll take a lot of good play against good teams to maintain that ranking,” said Patriots coach Rob Berry following Tuesday’s release of the first girls poll by the Associated Press.
Anna (10-0) joined Carroll as No. 1 in D-III.
Carroll (11-0) likely solidified its top rank following last Saturday’s 59-51 defeat of Chaminade Julinenne, which is No. 6. It also didn’t hurt that the Patriots were the D-II state runners-up last season.
On deck for the Patriots is a challenging two-game set at the Pickerington Central Shoot-Out this weekend. Carroll plays unbeaten Oak Hill (9-0), No. 3 in D-III, on Saturday. Oak Hill lost to Anna in last season’s D-III state title game.
On Sunday, Carroll plays once-beaten Lima Bath, No. 9 in D-II. Besides two games each with CJ and Alter, Carroll also will play Detroit Country Day on Feb. 4, the day before the seed meeting. DCD is No. 3 in Michigan’s Class B state rankings.
“If you’re in a state championship one year, you’re not going to sneak up on anybody,” Berry said. “After the CJ game, we kind of thought that we’re 1-2 in the state.”
