HILLIARD — The Carroll High School boys soccer team watched its dream of a second-consecutive Division II state title disappear in a flurry of penalty kicks.
Carroll lost 5-3 to Bexley on Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Division II regional final at Hilliard Bradley.
Carroll’s Justin Mitchell scored on a penalty kick with 20:38 left in the second half. Bexley tied the match with 10:21 remaining when Collin Hepler connected off an assist from Ross Friedman.
Both teams were scoreless through two overtimes, but Bexley came up big in penalty kicks, outscoring Carroll 4-2. Bexley goalkeeper Christian Liefeld stopped Carroll on two attempts.
“It’s a tough way to lose,” Carroll coach Scott Molfenter said. Carroll, which finished 17-2-1, played its trademark tough defense. Bexley’s second-half goal was only the eighth Carroll had given up this year.
“I thought defensively we played well all year,” Molfenter said. “We won state last year, won the (Greater Catholic League) title and district title this year — we took a lot of teams’ best shot.”
Cin. Seven Hills 3, Catholic Central 0: Miles Hill, Gilbert Pasquale and Walker Schiff scored for Seven Hills, who avenged a 1-0 loss to Catholic Central earlier this season with a D-III regional final win.
“We had opportunities to get back into it in the second half,” Catholic Central coach Shane Latham said. “Overall, they had the best of us — from the physical standpoint and the speed standpoint. It was their game today.”
Catholic Central finished the season 20-1-1.
