The Chaminade Julienne girls soccer team stunned Carroll 2-1 in penalty kicks in a Division II district semifinal at Tecumseh on Monday night.
The Patriots (10-6-1), ranked No. 9 in the state in Division II, took a 1-0 lead and tested CJ goalkeeper Schaudon Herd often, forcing the senior to make 27 saves. But the Eagles tied it with under two minutes to play in regulation on a goal by forward Morgan Coffey.
Following two scoreless overtime periods and seven rounds of penalty kicks, CJ’s eighth kicker, Sarah Chapman, knocked in the game-winner.
It was the second tournament win for the Eagles, who won only twice in the regular season.
“We were clearly the underdogs, but the team really believed we could win,” said CJ coach Roy Craig, whose team lost to Carroll 2-1 in the regular season.
“We’ve been close all year and played a really difficult schedule, but the team is really starting to come together and jell at the right time.”
The Eagles (4-13-1) play Ross on Thursday in the district final. The site and time of the game are yet to be announced.
Centerville 1, Miamisburg 0: Senior Katie Weiskircher scored in the first half for the Elks (15-1-2), ranked No. 8 in the state in Division I.
Miami Valley 1, Preble Shawnee 0, OT: Sophomore Lauren Marquis scored the winning goal for the Rams (10-6-2) less than a minute into overtime. Miami Valley (10-6-2) moves on to play Mariemont, No. 3 in the state in Division III.
