Centerville High School boys cross country coach Jim Weckesser tags Fairmont as the best team in the Dayton area. But the young Elks are closing.
Paced by one senior, three juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen making up its top 10, the Elks want to give the Firebirds a run for the Greater Western Ohio Conference title in two weeks. But first comes a good measuring stick: the Midwest Meet of Champions at Hilliard on Saturday, Oct. 3. The meet is a Who’s Who of state-ranked teams and runners.
“Our big goal is to get top 10. If we get top 10 we’ll be really excited,” said Weckesser, whose Elks return just one runner from the team that finished third at the MMOC in 2008.
Senior Kevin Aldrich, juniors Domenic Fish (44th last year) and Colin Wurster and freshman Josh Steible are expected to lead the Elks’ effort. Also keep an eye on Vandalia Butler senior Doug Norris, who is expected to challenge for a top spot among individuals.
Boys soccer
Tippecanoe likely won’t have to replace its nets after this season.
The Red Devils defense has made sure of that. Tipp (9-0-3 overall, 8-0 Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division) has allowed just seven goals behind senior keeper Dan Gibson and defenders Matt Gioiello, Ryan Wheeler, Andrew Abboud and Daniel Pfister.
Girls soccer
So far, so good for Carroll holding off state-ranked Fenwick in the Girls Greater Cincinnati League’s Grey North Division.
At 4-1, Carroll holds a slim lead over 3-1-1 Fenwick, which is ranked No. 2 in the D-II state poll. Carroll beat Fenwick 3-0 on Sept. 16.
Tennis
Beavercreek’s Natalie Machicao is the player to beat when the tennis sectional starts next week. Machicao earned the top seed in D-I singles play. Centerville’s Anastasia Voevodin and Elise Ranich are No. 1 in doubles.
In D-II, Waynesville’s Alyssa Ritchie (singles) and Oakwood’s duo of Hilary Paisley and Jackie White (doubles) took the top spots.
Volleyball
Beavercreek (12-4), Springfield (13-1) and Lebanon (13-4) should be considered top contenders when the Greater Western Ohio Conference tournament starts Tuesday, Oct. 6.
But don’t count out Centerville despite a 7-8 record. The Elks are tied with the Beavers atop the GWOC Central Division at 4-1 after the Beavers’ four-set win Wednesday.
“For us to come out on top, every single person on our team must be at their best,” Elks coach Monte Moser said.
The four-round tournament concludes on Oct. 15.
Golf
Chaminade Julienne’s girls team has a firm grip on the Girls Greater Cincinnati League Grey Division. The Eagles are 20-6 overall and 11-4 in the division. Madeline Kaminski (39.70) and Micaela Cronin (40.60) lead the team in average.
Alter has won the last eight Grey titles.
