On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Chaminade Julienne High School football team converted a 31-yard field goal from Dillon Lett. That gave the Eagles a 10-8 lead against Marshall at Welcome Stadium, and it was the beginning of an unusual and important 19-point fourth quarter for a CJ team that entered the final period on the verge of an 0-2 start.
But after beating Marshall 26-8, the Eagles can praise their special teams and look forward to the coming return of one of the area’s best defensive players, Darrien Howard, who has missed the first two games because of injury.
“We had good special teams, and we played good run defense,” said CJ coach Andy Helms. “They had about 115 yards rushing, which is about 300 less than they had last year against us.”
Last season’s game ended as a CJ loss that was later forfeited back to the Eagles because Marshall used an ineligible player. The Eagles went on to the Division III playoffs for the first time since 2005, raising expectations with plenty of returning talent.
But the Eagles opened the season with a 23-0 loss to Troy about which Helms said, “We were surprised we didn’t play better.”
Then they trailed Marshall 8-7 after three quarters before the floodgates opened, as CJ recovered two fumbled punts in the fourth quarter and converted both into points. The Eagles gained confidence on special teams and got another strong performance from receiver Tim Szabo, who has 17 catches in two games.
Plus, the Eagles expect to have Howard, the 6-foot-2, 245-pound sophomore, back soon.
“Last week against Troy was kind of a perfect storm, and it was unfortunate how it turned out,” Helms said. “But we did a good job defensively (against Marshall), and we were able to get a win.”
More TV for Wayne
After showing off plenty of running ability (214 yards, 3 TDs) last week in a national broadcast against Moeller, Wayne quarterback and Ohio State recruit Braxton Miller will be back in the spotlight at 3:30 p.m. today when the Warriors play Canton McKinley in the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
Alter-Centerville tickets
Tickets for Friday’s highly anticipated matchup between Alter and Centerville at Centerville Stadium will go on sale Tuesday morning at both schools. Ron Ullery, the Centerville athletic director and football coach, said there are about 8,000 seats in the stadium, and there is plenty of standing area.
Tickets cost $4 for students, $6 for adults and $7 at the gate. Some reserve seats might be available at $10, but most tickets will not guarantee a seat.
