DAYTON — The Chaminade Julienne High School girls soccer team, with its 3-13-1 record, trailed state-ranked Carroll 1-0 with less than five minutes remaining Tuesday night.
But after a score by senior Morgan Coffey in the final minutes, two overtime periods and two rounds of penalty kicks, the Eagles scored a major upset in the sectional tournament final.
With the defeat of Carroll (10-7-1, ranked No. 9 in the state), CJ advanced to today’s Division II district final against Ross (16-1-1) at Kings High School. Despite winning just one of their first 12 games, the Eagles are one of 32 teams remaining in the D-II postseason after moving down from D-I this year in divisional realignment.
“The girls kept coming out, working hard, trying to do the right things,” CJ coach Roy Craig said. “There’s been no drama; this is a great group of kids.”
The game against Carroll was scoreless until the Patriots scored with less than 10 minutes remaining. CJ then changed to an attacking offense that produced the equalizing goal.
Craig said he felt good about his team’s chances in overtime and in penalty kicks because CJ’s senior goalkeeper, Schaudon Herd, had been playing well. The teams each made 2 of 5 penalty kicks in the first round, and the game ended when Herd saved the third penalty kick in the second round and CJ scored.
Craig joked the most enjoyable part was the bus ride home, which included a winning soundtrack not often heard this year.
“They drive the bus driver crazy because they sing ... and not very well,” Craig chuckled. “But they do it loudly, so there was a lot of that.”
