CJ defeats McNick to win GCL North title

Staley leads the way for Eagles with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

Chaminade Julienne defeated Cincinnati McNicholas 62-45 in boys basketball Friday to win the Greater Catholic League North Division title for the seventh time in the last 10 seasons.

John Staley shot 11-of-12 from the field and 6-of-6 from the foul line on his way to 28 points and 12 rebounds. Justin Bibbs had 20.

The Eagles (13-5, 9-3) won the league outright thanks to Alter’s 63-43 loss to La Salle.

Drew Hall led McNicholas (8-10) with 16 points.

La Salle 63, Alter 43: On senior night for the Lancers (18-1, 9-0), La Salle was bigger, faster and stronger.

Jake Laravie had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Knights (9-9, 7-6) and Jaaron Simmons had 12 points.

Valley View 74, Brookville 61: Zack Denny scored 37 points for the victorious Spartans (13-5), connecting on 11 field goals and shooting 11-of-12 from the foul line. Luke Landis had 22 points and Tyler Tincher had 21 for the Blue Devils (2-16).

Dunbar 87, Stivers 51: A.J. Harris had 14 points with 13 assists, Gary Akbar had 11 points with 16 rebounds and Deontae Hawkins led Dunbar (18-0) in scoring with 16 points. The Wolverines connected on 13 3-point baskets.

Troy Christian 56, Yellow Springs 40: Grant Zawadzki scored 20 and Christian Salazar had 13 for Troy Christian (13-5, 9-1), which has a one-game lead over Dayton Christian in the Metro Buckeye Conference with each team having two league games remaining.

Dayton Christian 74, Middletown Christian 61: Mark Lieberman scored a game-high 22 points for the victorious Warriors (11-6, 9-2), including going 11-of-12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. Zach Henderson led the Eagles (12-6, 7-4) with 16 points.

Beavercreek 77, Springfield 43: Kyle Rader tallied 22 points and Tyler Reasoner added 15 for Creek (14-4, 8-1). Henry Alexander had 21 points in a losing effort.

Troy 76, Sidney 58: The Trojans (12-6, 9-0) scored early and often, clinching the GWOC North title outright. Tyler Miller led the way with 22 points, Cody May had 16 and Seth Lucas 12. Patwaun Hudson led the Yellow Jackets (3-14, 3-6) with 24 points.

Miamisburg 84, Xenia 59: Connor Brown had 26 points, John Giles had 18 and Nathan Chambers 17 for the Vikings (11-6, 4-5). Aaron Curtis paced the Buccaneers (11-7, 5-4) with 14 points.

Wayne 52, Fairmont 40: The Warriors (8-11, 5-4) used a second-half rally to defeat the Firebirds (7-11, 2-7). Keith Clements led Wayne with 14 points and Jacob Roalef had 14 for Fairmont.

Tri-Village 63, Newton 41: Shade Brubaker had 25 points, including seven 3-point buckets, and Kyle Pipenger added 15 points for the Patriots (15-3). Jordan Hodges led Newton (8-10) with 17.

Miami Valley 46, Emmanuel Christian 29: Najei Jabari had 15 points and Lauren Shaver 10 as the Rams (18-2) won their 25th straight conference game.

Also, Shelby Carpenter was named the Player of the Year for the MBC. Miami Valley will play Lockland on Feb. 18 for the opening round of the playoffs.
