DAYTON — Like it did for football, Chaminade Julienne is looking to one of its own to extend the success of its girls high school basketball program with the promotion of Mandy Myers to head coach Thursday.

A varsity assistant with the Eagles the last six seasons, Myers is a 2000 CJ grad and played on the 1999 Division II state title team under former coach Frank Goldsberry.

The position opened when Duane Williams surprisingly resigned this spring after two seasons.

“I was able to learn and take away a lot of what (Williams) was instilling in the program,” Myers said.

“I’m just excited to move forward with the tradition that he’s been able to continue here.”

It’s the first head coaching position for Myers, and she’ll have plenty to work with. CJ was 17-8 last season, losing 40-35 to Carroll in the D-II regional final. Four starters return from that game: Leading scorer Raytea Long (11.7 points per game), Emily Michael (9.9), Krista White (6.6) and Simonne Gage (6.4).

“Yeah,” said Myers, “we’re excited about our prospects.”

Chaminade also will retain veteran assistant Alan Hoskins.

CJ (8-2) won the highly contested Girls Greater Cincinnati League Grey North Division title last season. Carroll lost 54-51 to Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown in the D-II state final.

CJ eliminated Alter (19-6) in a regional semifinal. That snapped a streak of three straight years for the Knights to reach the state final four. Alter won the 2008 D-II state title.

“The GGCL (Grey) North is the best league in the state,” Myers said. “We’re tremendously lucky to be in such a competitive league.”

It’s the second high-profile position CJ has filled this spring. CJ elevated former assistant Marcus Colvin to head football coach after Andy Helms was not retained following five seasons.

“Mandy has been part of the success of this program for many years,” Athletic Director Jon Payne said.

“It will be exciting to see her take leadership and put her stamp on the program. She’s got the experience and heart for the school’s mission to make some great things happen.”
