The Chaminade Julienne High School girls golf team had been to the Division II state tournament the last two seasons.

CJ finished seventh two years ago, sixth last year. Repeating either of those performances would have been enough for senior Diann Bonner, so winning the state title at the Ohio State Gray Course in Columbus on Saturday was a memory she’ll never forget.

“I was walking in hoping we would place in the top six,” Bonner said. “To know we finished first is surreal.”

CJ finished with 710, enough to beat second place Poland Seminary by three strokes. Alter finished 10th with 791.

The Eagles came into Saturday’s second round with a 10-stroke lead. Partnered with contenders Poland Seminary and Lima Central Catholic, CJ coach George Menker said the big lead and pairing up with their biggest competition helped give his team an edge.

“We had a lot of confidence,” Menker said. “The girls had been coming on strong all year. Our players were each playing heads up against the girls from the other two schools and it turned out good.”

Junior Mikaela Hadaway led CJ with a 165 and finished tied for 10th in the individual standings. Bonner scored 171, while fellow senior Adrianne Marx scored 184. Sophomore Kaitlyn Cartone scored 190 while Emily Poock scored 208.

The highest local individual finisher in Division II was Sarah Kolodzik of Miami Valley School. She was fourth with 155.

No three-peat: Oakwood, the two-time defending Division II boys champion, finished fourth with 694.

Kenton Ridge won the division with 677. Sophomore Tripp French led Oakwood with 169.

A five-layer day: Middletown Christian was third in the Division III boys tournament with 685. Lehman Catholic was seventh with 711. Cedarville’s Jordan Reese finished seventh in the individual results with 164.

Besides battling each other and the course, golfers had to contend with the weather.

“It was really rough,” CJ sophomore Kaitlyn Cartone said. “I was wearing five layers.
