DAYTON — Emily Michael smiled when she thought about the happenings in her life the past five days.

“Pretty awesome,” she said. “I was happy to get my college decision out of the way. It helped me concentrate on this game. I’ve never wanted to win one as much as this one.”

Michael, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, had 12 points and 10 rebounds (the first double-double of her career) along with six steals and five assists as Chaminade Julienne routed Carroll 52-34 on an emotion-filled Senior Night at CJ.

The game matched two of the best Division II teams in the state. Carroll, which finished the regular season at 18-2, is No. 1 in the state ratings while CJ (17-2) is No. 3. Carroll is No. 1 in the Dayton Daily News D-II ratings, while CJ is No. 2. Carroll is the top seed in the D-II sectional postseason tournament at Xenia. CJ is the top seed at the Springboro sectional.

The win gave CJ a tie with Carroll for the Grey North Division championship in the Girls Greater Cincinnati League. It is the first championship for Carroll since it entered the GGCL seven years ago.

Michael, who averages 10.6 points per game, made her college choice Saturday, picking Division I St. Bonaventure of the Atlantic 10. She chose the Bonnies over Bucknell. “It’s a big relief,” she said. “Not that many schools had shown interest. I think it’s a good fit.”

Michael was 3-for-5 from 3-point range. She had a trey, two steals, two assists and three rebounds in the first quarter as CJ jumped out to a 16-4 lead. CJ held Carroll without a basket for 5:08 of the quarter. The Patriots never recovered.

“That first quarter is about as well as we’ve played all year,” CJ coach Mandy Myers said.

Simmone Gage led CJ with 15 points, while Raytea Long had 11. Kelley Austria had 18 for Carroll.
