The conversation during the van ride to their golf matches centers around their high school classes, their social life, and more recently, Homecoming.
The Chaminade Julienne girls, after all, let their golf game do its own talking.
The Eagles enter Monday’s Division II sectional tournament as the favorite after finishing second on WGC Golf Course in Xenia in 2010.
The Eagles, who have reached the state tournament the past two seasons, have yet to lose to a D-II team on their schedule. All three losses have been to D-I teams from Cincinnati.
“I would say this is the best team I’ve had in five seasons,” Chaminade Julienne coach George Menker said.
Among its accomplishments, the fifth-year program tied the school record for wins (20-3) set in 2009, and junior Mikaela Hadaway matched the school record with a 34.
Seniors Diann Bonner (43 average for nine holes), Adrianne Marx (47.8) and Erin Warfield (50.9) provide veteran leadership. Junior Emily Poock (49.4), sophomore Kaitlyn Cartone (47.4) and freshman Sarah Downing (52.7) are also in the mix.
Hadaway (39.1) is expected to challenge — along with Alter’s Mary Rose Metter (38.1), among others — for medalist honors.
The district tournament is Oct. 5 at Pipestone Golf Course in Miamisburg.
State-ment games for Dayton Christian: The boys soccer team has rolled to a 6-2 record after season-opening losses to D-II powers Alter and Carroll.
Dayton Christian, ranked No. 7 in the D-III state poll, can improve its standing during its next three games with Oakwood (Saturday), Springfield Catholic Central (Tuesday) and Bethel (Oct. 1).
Those teams are a combined 24-2-1.
Senior Christian Alexander leads the team with nine goals and 10 assists.
Carroll hosts top teams: Carroll hosts the Midwest Catholic cross country championships at Kettering’s Indian Riffle Park on Saturday, bringing in teams from Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.
The meet, which features a big-school gold race and small-school silver race, starts at 10 a.m.
Among the top teams in the boys gold race are Cleveland St. Ignatius and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, the state’s top-ranked teams in D-I and D-II, respectively. Alter’s Eric Ledford and Carroll’s Brent Jennewine are among those expected to compete for the individual title.
In the girls gold division, St. Vincent-St. Mary and Olivia Albers-led Alter — Nos. 2 and 3 in D-II — are among the favorites. In the silver race, Carroll, paced by Taylor O’Neil, attempts to defend its title.
