DAYTON — Chaminade Julienne made clutch free throws when needed Monday night. Fairborn didn’t.

The result was a 54-51 overtime win for host CJ in a matchup between two of the area’s best girls high school basketball teams.

The Eagles, No. 2 in the Dayton Daily News Division II ratings, are 9-2.

Fairborn, No. 2 in the D-I ratings. dropped to 8-2.

Brittaney Jefferson, a 5-foot-6 junior who usually comes off the bench, hit two big free throws for CJ with 3.7 seconds left in the OT to make the score 54-51.

A 50 percent free-throw shooter, Jefferson got her first start of the season after a good defensive effort and 11 points in CJ’s loss to Carroll on Saturday.

She was sent to the free-throw line after Fairborn, trailing 52-51, missed a chance to go ahead with 4.9 seconds left.

Skyhawks guard Brooklyn Pumroy, who is headed to Marquette on a basketball scholarship, was fouled going to the basket. Althought Pumroy missed the first eight games of the season recovering from a knee injury, she is still one of the area’s best free throw shooters.

“I thought we were in trouble because Brooklyn is usually automatic from the line,” said CJ coach Mandy Myers. “But neither shot was close.

“Brittaney hustled, got the rebound and got fouled. That’s the first time she’s ever been a situation like that on the varsity and she buried both of them.”

Fairborn led 41-31 with 5:18 to play before CJ’s Emily Michael got hot in the fourth quarter. She scored 10 of her 13 points in the fourth to get her team within 43-42.

Raytea Long, who had 15 points and 12 rebounds, put the Eagles ahead 44-43 with a basket at 2:16 and made it 45-43 with a free throw at 1:21.

Pumroy, who had 12 points, tied the game at 45-all on two free throws with 1:01 left. It stayed that way going to OT.

Kristia White, who came off the bench to score eight points and grab nine rebounds, put CJ up 52-49 with two free throws with 27.9 seconds left.

Alexis Gassion, who had 20 points and eight rebounds, made two free throws with 19.5 seconds go to for a 52-51 game.
