Coldwater senior captures state bowling championship

COLUMBUS — Coldwater senior Crystal Boyer paced her Cavaliers with a tournament-high series 233-206-222 — 661 to win the state title at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state bowling tournament on Friday.

Boyer’s championship came at the Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl, where action resumes today with the boys tournament.

Her Cavaliers’ teammate Emily Bruns, a junior, was ninth overall with a 593 series as Coldwater was the top qualifying team going into the championship round. .

State championship team results were not available as of late Friday night.

While her Wayne High School teammates were state tournament rookies, Warriors junior Kayla Cummings posted a veteran score.

Cummings was second only to Boyer in the individual standings for a state-runner-up finish with a 203-220-214 — 637. And in their first state appearance, the Warriors advanced to the championship round.

Piqua’s Kayla Miller made her presence known in her first and final trip to the state tournament. The senior finished fifth in the individual competition with a 244-181-193 — 618.

Other area bowlers who posted top 15 scores included:

• Stebbins freshman Sierra Kanemoto (7th).

• Troy senior Kayla Brewer (12th).

• Wayne senior Codi O’Neal (13th).

• Beavercreek freshman Colleen Hines (14th).

UP NEXT: It’s the boys turn today as the state championships continue at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl. Qualifying round gets underway at 11 a.m.

Kenton Ridge returns to defend its 2010 title, while Coldwater, Fairmont, Fairborn, Troy and Mechanicsburg also compete in the team tournament.

Beavercreek senior Daniel Glascoe won the boys’ individual title last season but did not qualify for today’s finals.

Butler junior Brian Knotts and Sidney junior Trent Knoop compete as individuals.
