DDN girls basketball preseason poll

Hot Topics

Staff report Updated 4:59 PM Thursday, November 26, 2009

Division I

1. Vandalia Butler (20-4): With three D-I signees, the Aviators could be poised for a banner season. Great first-game matchup with visiting Tippecanoe today.

2. Fairmont (22-4): Perhaps the area’s most winning team the past five seasons. A big reason why UD landed senior frontliner Cassie Sant.

3. Xenia (20-2): Three starters return for the defending GWOC South champs, including WSU signee Jessica Alexander. Bucs won’t play Beavercreek or Fairmont in the regular season, but circle a Feb. 3 date with visiting Vandalia.

4. Beavercreek (21-3): The first time in four seasons the Beavers won’t have Mikaela Ruef patrolling the paint. Three starters return and plenty of upstarts from the deep program.

5. Fairborn (14-8): Easily the most talked-about team from opposing coaches during the preseason. Have progressed from five wins to 10 to 14 the last three seasons.

Division II

1. Alter (24-3): Four starters return, including the Christie sisters, Ashley and Courtney. Won state two seasons ago and fell in the state semifinals last season.

2. Tippecanoe (25-1): Red Devils have won 23 straight regular-season games and were the state poll champs last season. What they haven’t been able to do is get past Alter.

3. Chaminade Julienne (17-7): The Eagles have produced some outstanding national-caliber players the last decade. Count UConn signee Samarie Walker among them.

4. Carroll (17-8): The only things hurting the Patriots are being lumped with Alter and CJ in the tough GGCL Grey Division.

5. Oakwood (17-6): Three starters return for the Jills, who made their first district final appearance in 17 seasons, losing to Tipp.

Division III

1. Mid. Madison (20-6): With high-scoring Ally Malott, Braves advanced to regional final last season and have a great shot to go farther.

2. Waynesville (19-4): Three starters return for the Spartans, who cruised through the SWBL unbeaten last season.

3. Versailles (17-9): Tigers were brutalized in the MAC, going just 3-6. All that did was prepare them for the playoffs, and they advanced all the way to the state semifinals.

4. Anna (16-7): Rockets couldn’t bump Fort Loramie in the SCL and fell to powerful Miami East in a sectional final.

5. Brookville (17-4): SWBL winning season came to an abrupt end after losing to Milton-Union in the tourney opener.

Division IV

1. Fort Loramie (20-5): Redskins have advanced to the regional the last two seasons. Hope to finally earn elusive spot at state.

2. Southeastern (20-5): Trojans have been an area girls force since the mid-’80s. Must get past West Liberty-Salem for OHC hardware.

3. Miami Valley (17-5): Rams are in great position to roll to a Metro Buckeye Conference title.

4. Minster (15-7): Wildcats are hoping to duplicate Versailles’ MAC-tested postseason run.

5. Houston (16-8): Wildcats have returning experience to challenge Loramie and Anna in Shelby County League.
