FAIRBORN — A sluggish start did not hamper the state’s top-ranked Division II boys basketball team Friday night as Dunbar blasted Thurgood Marshall 79-53 in front of a semi-packed Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State University.
“It was just another game for us,” Dunbar coach Pete Pullen said. “... We can’t get high for one game and be down for another because we could get popped tomorrow, so we had to come out here and play steady.”
The Wolverines led the entire game, starting off with a 5-0 run and leading 17-11. They took a commanding 32-24 lead into the half, with Deontae “Teddy” Hawkins leading the way with 16 points. The play of Hawkins and senior standout Andre Yates had to increase because leading scorer Gary Akbar played sparingly with foul trouble.
Hawkins finished with 20 points and Yates led all scores with 22.
“I think they both played well,” Pullen said. “I think Teddy was real effective.
“Andre is coming into his own,” he continued. “He’s a player and he’s going to be hard to stop.”
The Cougars played without second-leading scorer Mark Alstork (two technicals) who was serving the second game of a two-game suspension. They were led by Joe Thomasson, who finished with 21 points.
Dunbar is 16-0. Marshall fell to 6-9.
