Dunbar senior guard Deon Stewart signed to play basketball at national junior college power Harcum (Pa.) College last weekend.
He’s the second Wolverine senior to sign, following the lead of point guard Ryan Bass to Oakland (Mich.) University.
“I think Harcum is a great fit for me,” said Stewart, the only Dunbar player to have started all 50 games the last two seasons.
“I’ve been thinking about this for a while; to continue my basketball career and go to a great college.”
The 6-foot-2 senior averaged nearly 13 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds during Dunbar’s run to the Division II state championship last season. He teamed with Bass and Geron Johnson to provide a lethal transition game for the Wolverines.
That should serve Stewart well at Harcum.
Located in Bryn Mawr, just outside Philadelphia, the uptempo Bears averaged a nation’s-best 111 points and were 25-0 at one point last season, finishing No. 1 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I rankings. Even better, it sent a half-dozen players to NCAA D-I schools following the season.
Stewart’s goal is to spend two years at Harcum, then land an NCAA D-I offer. As a freshman, he was on the varsity Dunbar roster that won a D-II state title.
“It went so quick,” Stewart said of his Dunbar career.
“At this point I appreciate it more than ever. Dunbar has prepared me very well for what I want to do.”
Johnson should be the next Dunbar senior to sign. He reportedly has narrowed his choices to Miami Dade and Chipola (Fla.) junior colleges.
• Marshall standout Greg Gainey will play at Northern Kentucky if he can score high enough on the next ACT test in July. If not, he’ll also go the JC route.
Davenport to Sinclair
Lebanon’s Blake Davenport has signed to play basketball at Sinclair. The 6-1 senior guard averaged 16 points the last two seasons for the Warriors after moving from Oak Park, Calif.
“We are extremely excited about adding Blake to our backcourt and will look to him for his experience and scoring,” said Tartan Pride coach Jeff Price.
Centerville senior guard Pat Crawford previously signed with Sinclair.
Creamer in at Dixie
Kregg Creamer has been approved as Dixie’s athletic director and boys basketball coach for the next school year. He replaces Joe Miller, who resigned his coaching position this spring.
He’ll also take over for current AD Jason Hypes.
Creamer was a hoops standout at Brookville High School and is a Miami University grad.
