FAIRBORN — The Fairborn Skyhawks passed their first divisional test in the Greater Western Ohio Conference.
They overcame a sluggish start to defeat the Miamisburg Vikings 23-10 in the South division opener on Homecoming Night at Buschmeyer Field on Friday.
Despite a number of ill-timed flags and a few potentially costly turnovers, the tight Fairborn team persevered and ran the clock out late.
“We’ve got a unique group,” said coach Roy Thobe, who called the mistakes “correctable.” “A group of kids working towards a common goal makes it easier to jell.”
Fairborn (4-2, 1-0) had been rolling, averaging almost 50 points a game in its three previous wins. It took a while to get started, but after trailing 3-0 in the first quarter on a 40-yard Kyle Bollett field goal, the Skyhawks went to work and scored 23 straight points.
Fairborn quarterback Kendrick Williams and teammates Billy Jackson, Noah Rehs and Devon Hamilton go back to fifth grade, so the unit has chemistry.
“Our ‘O’ never gives up,” said Williams, who passed for 164 yards and a touchdown. “But we have to thank the ‘D.’ They played their butts off.”
Fairborn led 7-3 after Williams hit senior Jason Moorman for a 5-yard touchdown pass 8:48 into the second quarter.
Nick Franklin made it 10-3 with a 28-yard field goal before third-quarter rushing scores by Hamilton and Torrell Miller put Fairborn up 23-3.
Zak Kruer scored late for Miamisburg (2-4, 0-1). He finished with 138 yards on 30 rushes, 125 coming in the first half.
Miamisburg, missing six starters with injuries, seized momentum late in the first half after an interception and three straight Fairborn penalties gave the guests a field goal chanc,e but the Vikings couldn’t capitalize.
“We absolutely let it get away from us,” said Miamisburg coach Tim Lewis. “That’s been the problem — we’re our own worst enemy.”
