FAIRBORN — After a draining two weeks, Fairborn needed to reinvent its boys basketball team.
The Skyhawks would do that with a lineup makeover, a sellout to high-end effort and a whole lot of Kendrick Williams.
And Friday that all came together in a stunning 69-62 upset of visiting Springboro, the No. 1 team in the Dayton Daily News Division I high school ratings.
“I can’t even describe this,” said Williams after pouring a career-high 39 points on the Panthers. “I’m so excited. This is for all my teammates who aren’t even on the team anymore.”
It was just two weeks ago that Fairborn and visiting Miamisburg brawled at Memorial Fieldhouse. The fallout was multiple team suspensions, a season-ending injury to a Miamisburg player, another player who was dismissed from Fairborn’s team and yet another Fairborn student who could still face legal action.
That’s why Skyhawk players and coaches were so ecstatic to break a two-game slump.
“These guys have been through a lot lately,” Fairborn coach Nathan Chivington said.
“They’ve been on an emotional roller coaster.”
Chivington challenged Williams to lead Fairborn (11-7) even more after the midseason makeover. He’s scored 34, 30 and now 39 since the Miamisburg game.
And the 5-foot-11 senior guard unloaded a bit of everything on the Panthers. He had five 3-pointers, including three straight in the second quarter. When Boro challenged him, he easily drove to the basket and finished or was fouled. He hit all 10 of his free throws.
His final 3 with 3:13 left put Fairborn up for good. He also scored nine of the Skyhawks’ final 15 points.
Jordan Michael added 14 points for Fairborn and A.J. Wagner 12.
Big Maverick Morgan led the Panthers (14-4) with 26 points. Ryan Murray added 19 and also hit five 3-pointers.
“(Williams) was awesome,” Springboro coach Troy Holtrey said. “He put the team on his back and carried them to victory. We did not have an answer.
“They’ve gone through a lot and they showed a lot of toughness and character. They should be proud of this performance.”
