DAYTON — Sophie Bolser and Sarah Lilley are getting healthy at the right time for the Fairborn girls high school softball team.
Bolser threw her best overall game of the season Tuesday, April 27, while shutting out Chaminade Julienne, 6-0, at the Action Sports Complex.
The sophomore right-hander allowed only three hits and no walks while striking out 14 to improve to 6-2 and drop her earned-run average 0.96.
Lilley, a junior center fielder, went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. In eight games, she is hitting .444 with seven RBIs. Senior shortstop Jessie Little drove in two runs.
Fairborn, 15-5, has now won six straight. CJ is 10-6 and had a three-game winning streak broken.
“Good win for us right before the tournament draw (Sunday),” said Fairborn coach Bob Shively. “CJ is a good club. So this will give us some more credibility when it comes to being seeded.”
Bolser, who had a 9-3 record as a freshman, broke two bones in her lower right leg in a collision with a catcher last summer. The injury required surgery, with Bolser in a cast for almost five months.
She spent most of the winter sitting in a chair and throwing for Jodi Eickmeyer, who coaches many of the area pitchers.
“Doing that I got a lot stronger in my upper body and learned to control my pitches a lot better,” she said.
Bolser has been playing all season but has shown more leg strength the last two weeks, giving her more velocity on her fastball.
Lilley, who hit .405 last year, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee the beginning of basketball season. She was not cleared to play until April 15.
“I could take batting practice but not use my legs,” said Lilley, “so I had to concentrate on bat control and using my wrists.
“It didn’t take long for me to get back to using my legs to drive through the ball.”
