When the 2012 college football season kicks off, it won’t matter why Vandalia senior Taylor Decker or most other recruit chose this school over that school.
Well, except to the trolls on college recruiting message boards. And there were plenty of those out Sunday as word spread across the Internet of Decker’s decision to sign with Ohio State after previously committing to Notre Dame.
College football obviously has a passionate following, but why do so many people — many who would probably need a Gatorade break running a 40-yard dash — complain so much about someone making a decision they feel is best for their future?
It’s no wonder Decker wouldn’t answer his cellphone Sunday — and no one can blame him for that — but he did respond to a text message confirming his decision.
Of all the comments, Vandalia coach Greg Bush said it best in a phone interview: “As long as he chose the university he wants to get a degree from, I’m happy. I’m happy for a kid that goes to college and doesn’t play football. It’s all about getting that degree.”
And how about this: The next time a teenager doesn’t choose your school — any teenager and any school — simply post, “It would be great to have you here, but good luck at (insert school here).”
We’ll all be better off for it.
